# XIC — Examine If Closed

Source: https://rungs.dev/docs/ladder-logic/instructions/xic

> XIC (Examine If Closed) passes power along a ladder rung when the referenced bit is 1 — a normally-open contact in the rungs.dev ladder simulator.

Passes power along the rung when the referenced bit is `1`. Equivalent to a normally-open contact.

## Operands [#operands]

| Name      | Type   |
| --------- | ------ |
| `dataBit` | `BOOL` |

## How It Works [#how-it-works]

If `dataBit` is `1`, power passes through. If `0`, power is blocked.

## Example [#example]

```ladder
XIC(Sensor)OTE(Lamp)
```

`Lamp` is energized while `Sensor` is `1`.

> Try `XIC` in the [Lamp Follow exercise](https://rungs.dev/exercises/lamp-follow) — drive a lamp straight from a button input.

## Common Mistakes [#common-mistakes]

- Using `XIC` to check that a bit is **off**. `XIC` only passes power when the bit is `1`. To check for `0`, use [`XIO`](https://rungs.dev/docs/ladder-logic/instructions/xio).
- Examining a non-`BOOL` tag — `XIC` only takes `BOOL`. For numeric comparisons, use [compare instructions](https://rungs.dev/docs/ladder-logic/instructions/compare).
